When I was six years old, Disney released the original Swiss Family Robinson movie and I must have seen it five or six times. My young imagination was captivated by this story of a shipwrecked family living and thriving on a remote island, riding ostriches and fighting off pirates. To a young boy, this truly was paradise.
The makers of Nim's Island, now on DVD, are hoping that young girls will feel the same way about this story of an eleven-year-old girl and her scientist father who have made their home on an uncharted island, but just to be sure, they've grafted elements of Romancing the Stone and Home Alone to this tale.
An irritating performance by Jodie Foster as an agoraphobic writer of adventure stories almost sinks the ship but the adorable Abigail Breslin is on hand to provide inspiration to pre-teen girls everywhere.
Nim's Island is exaggerated and uneven but your daughters won't notice.
