The most amazing thing about Beowulf, now on DVD, is not the animation, the special effects or even the effective adaptation of this epic literary work to the big screen.
The most amazing thing about Beowulf is that it got a PG-13 rating! Literally drenched in blood, bawdy dialogue and airborne body parts, Beowulf would seem to warrant an "R" but the review board thought differently.
That means that adolescent America is free to watch randy wenches engaging testosterone-fueled warriors and Angelina Jolie at her sultry best, not to mention a 3-D close-up of Anthony Hopkins' bare bottom.
For those who like their action fast and furious, Beowulf delivers at an unrelenting pace, with a barrage of combat scenes that borders on sensory overload.
Between the battles, Beowulf is mostly wine, women, and song, occasionally interrupted by the appearance of a demon, but if you liked 300, you'll dig this as well.
