MONEYBALL
Rated PG-13
Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Chris Pratt, Kathryn Morris, Tammy Blanchard, Glenn Morshower
"Moneyball"

Updated January 10, 2012

On paper, the movie Moneyball doesn’t sound all that entertaining, especially if you have no interest in major league baseball.

But for those who love the sport, the intricate details of the wheeling and dealing that goes on in a major league clubhouse, and when you throw in an all star cast featuring Brad Pitt and Philip Seymour Hoffman, this movie could be a home run. Okay, enough with the baseball clichés.

The story revolves around Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) after he takes the helm of the Oakland Athletics as the team’s general manager. Beane implements a non-traditional approach involving computer analysis and metrics to select players and build a winning baseball team in the big leagues for much less money compared to other MLB teams.

This is the true behind-the-scenes story of how it all went down. Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Art Howe, the manager of the Oakland Athletics.

Moneyball was a modest hit at the box office and the film garnered numerous Golden Globe nominations. Brad Pitt is likely to snag an Oscar nod as well for Best Actor.

The movie is directed by Bennett Miller. The film’s running time is 2 hours and 13 minutes. Extras include a blooper reel where Brad Pitt “loses it” and a feature called Moneyball: Playing the Game.

COWBOYS & ALIENS

Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Adam Beach, Noah Ringer

Updated December 6, 2011

Just the premise of not-so-friendly aliens from outer space visiting the old west of Arizona gives this movie lover chills. Sounds like my kind of summer movie. After all, back in 1873, there weren’t any apps for UFO sightings and abductions, so this movie should please old western lovers and sci-fi lovers at the same time. Now there’s something you don’t hear every day.

Cowboys & Aliens is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. The movie boasts two heavyweight actors in Daniel Craig and the legendary Harrison Ford.

In the movie, a stranger (Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past comes across the Arizona Territory desert town of Absolution. The only small piece of memory he has of his past is not in his mind, but shackled to his wrist. He has no idea how the shackle got there or what it meant.

However, in Absolution, strangers are unwelcome, especially those that have no memory of their past. The stranger butts heads with tough-as-nail Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford) who tries to get him to leave town.

That is until a bunch of aliens from outer space decide to attack the town and abduct the incredulous townspeople one by one. Suddenly this stranger is in high demand by the people of Absolution and Dolarhyde to help fight off these creatures never heard or dreamed of before.

The stranger just may hold the key to help fight off the aliens.

Cowboy & Aliens is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of western and sci-fi action and violence and some partial nudity. It was filmed in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico and Los Angeles.

In the wildly raunchy and hugely successful comedy The Hangover, the saying “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” held true for four friends on a Bachelor’s Party weekend in Sin City…for the most part.

Not everything stayed in Vegas, as a dentist with a knocked out tooth, along with a severely sunburned groom provided physical reminders of the outrageous weekend, even though the four friends didn’t have much of a memory of what went on.

As successful as the original movie was, you just knew there would be a sequel, and that’s what we get in almost as successful The Hangover Part 2, now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

This time around, the four friends Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug head to Bangkok, Thailand to celebrate Stu’s upcoming wedding.

Stu of course remembers that he didn’t remember much about the foursome’s Vegas visit, so he plans what he thinks will be a quiet brunch for he and his buddies in Bangkok. After all, what could go wrong at a brunch? With these guys, plenty.

Boxing legend Mike Tyson will reprise his role in the new Hangover, so this is sure to be another wild weekend.

The Hangover Part 2 is rated R for rough language throughout the film, strong sexual content including graphic nudity, drug use and a few brief violent images. Extras include a tour of Bangkok with Mr. Chow and ‘Not Your Everyday Monkey.’

However, there are Dark Forces at work that could tear the threesome apart. In addition, the world of wizardry has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord.

FAIR GAME
Rated PG-13
Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Noah Emmerich, Liraz Charchi, Nicholas Sadler
"Fair Game"

Updated March 29, 2011

Here’s a ripped-from-the-headlines thriller that will have both sides of the political spectrum arguing their positions all over again. The movie Fair Game is based on the true story of CIA covert officers Valerie Plame and her husband Joe Wilson.

The movie is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray™.

You’ll remember back to when George W. Bush was president and Plame was leading an investigation into the possibility that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction within its borders.

Ms. Plame’s husband is then drawn into the investigation to substantiate the possibility of an alleged sale of enriched uranium, used in the production of such weapons, from the African country of Niger.

Joe Wilson eventually reports that he could not find any evidence of the sale. His findings, or lack thereof, are not exactly what the Bush administration wanted to hear. So, the administration ignores him.

Mr. Wilson doesn’t take too kindly to the Bush administration’s reaction and goes on to write a scathing editorial in the New York Times that throws fuel on the brewing firestorm. The editorial is just the beginning of a series of events that will lead to a war of words between the couple and the Bush administration.

Fair Game is rated PG-13 rough language. Running time is 1 hour and 48 minutes.
