Personality Influences Weight

Personality Influences WeightResearchers from the National Institute on Aging conducted a study to see if personality traits are associated with weight and body mass index, which is a number calculated from a person's weight and height to provide an indication of body fat.

They found that people who are impulsive by nature have a greater tendency to be overweight than those who are disciplined and conscientious.

In fact, participants in the study who scored in the top 10 percent on impulsivity weighed an average of 22 pounds more than their counterparts in the bottom 10 percent.

It’s common sense that impulsive people are more likely to give in to temptation, finding it harder to stick to a sustained program of healthy eating and physical activity.

“Impulsive” people included those who enjoy taking risks, and those who are antagonistic, competitive and aggressive.

The American Psychological Association points out that weight issues are influenced by physiology as well as behavior.

The association also pointed out that group weight loss programs seem to work best for people who are extroverts, while people who are introverted or shy may find other methods to be more effective.

Understanding your personality type can give you an edge when planning a weight management strategy.
