If you find excuses that keep you from working out, or if you aren't getting the results you expected, a personal trainer can keep you on track to achieve your fitness goals.
A survey by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) showed that supervised workouts with a certified trainer improve results.
Part of the reason is that when you have scheduled appointments you tend to stick with the program. Plus, trainers encourage you to work harder as you progressively increase your workout intensity.
Reputation and personal compatibility are factors when choosing a trainer. So is certification by an organization that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCAA). This assures that your trainer has the education to guide your exercise regimen safely and effectively. For instance, ACE offers professional certifications as personal trainer, group exercise instructor, clinical exercise specialist, and lifestyle and weight management consultant. Each requires a different set of educational standards.
While some people use a trainer at a gym or at home a few times a week, many find that a monthly appointment is enough to stay self-motivated and challenged by an ongoing fitness routine.
