Holiday Weight Control

Be sensible! Don't overeat during the holidays!Holidays and overeating don’t have to go hand in hand.

With a little thought, you can indulge in your favorite treats and still keep your weight under control.

Start by eating breakfast. The goal is to avoid ravenous hunger, which leads to binging and overeating.

Eat a sensible lunch and snack on carrots or fruits throughout the day.

If you’re going to a party at dinnertime, eat something before you go so you don’t show up feeling starved. If there’s a buffet, take a look at all the choices before you load your plate. Choose your favorites. If you can go back for seconds, start with just a few things you like the most.

Then eat mindfully, slowly, to give your brain and stomach a chance to feel full. Think about why you’re eating. Eat for pleasure, not as a way to cope with emotional stress.

Be aware of hidden calories in drinks, especially eggnog and sweet holiday cocktails. Alcohol stimulates the appetite, so alternate one “real” drink with a glass of water.

Bump up your exercise. Walk, take the stairs, park farther from the door when shopping. Every little bit helps.

And when you do indulge, enjoy it and keep it in perspective. Then get back on track and stick to your plan.
