Breast Self Exam

It is important to perform self breast exams to detect potential breast cancerEarly detection is the best way to prevent a life-threatening bout with breast cancer, and regularly scheduled mammograms are an important tool for detecting even the tiniest of irregularities.

The American Cancer Society also recommends that women conduct breast self examinations beginning in their 20s. This is easy to do.

Since every woman is familiar with how her breasts look and feel, if a change occurs you may be the first to notice – if you pay attention.

Changes to look for include a hard lump or knot in or near one breast or in your underarm; change in color, shape, size, or texture of a breast; redness, warmth, swelling, or pain; dimpling, puckering, or ridges of the skin on the breast; a nipple that is pushed inward rather than sticking out; itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple; or nipple discharge other than breast milk.

Examining your breasts once a month is an easy habit to start. Many women do this while in the shower.

If you notice anything unusual, see a doctor for further evaluation.
