Bicycling is great for cardiovascular health and lower body muscle strength, and it’s a great way to burn calories and boost overall metabolism for weight control.
Autumn’s cooler weather and colorful foliage make this an ideal time to get pedaling. Because most Connecticut roads don’t have bike lanes and many vehicle drivers don’t know that bikes are considered vehicles just like cars, it’s extremely important that cyclists take extra precaution to avoid accidents.
Bicyclists are required to follow the same rules as car drivers, including obeying traffic signs and lane markings. Cyclists should ride with the flow of traffic, not against it, and not on sidewalks.
Be visible by wearing bright colors and using bold hand signals to alert drivers about your intentions to make a turn. If at a stoplight, it’s okay to make eye contact with the driver to confirm your presence.
Be prepared for the unexpected such as a car door that may open in a line of parked vehicles, or cars suddenly pulling out of a driveway or parking space. Make sure your bike has reflectors if you’re riding at dusk.
And remember to wear a properly fitting bike helmet. If you’re in an accident, it can literally make the difference between life and death.
