Athletic Shoes

Choose the right shoes for your sport!Choosing athletic shoes can be tricky, with so many to choose from.

If you’re serious about your sport, your decision should be based on structure more than style and color.

Start by choosing a store where the salespeople are knowledgeable and can steer you in the right direction, understanding what the demands of your sport are. They’ll also know which brands are best matched for you based on your foot’s arch and width.

For instance, running and walking shoes need stability as your foot moves heel to toe, while basketball and tennis shoes need enough flexibility to provide lateral support.

Do you workout on asphalt or grass or gravel? That makes a difference too. Shoes for skateboarding need support in the heel and ankle to prevent injuries from jumping and twisting.

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine says if you participate in a particular activity at least three hours a week you should invest in a sport-specific shoe. This not only helps prevent injury and pain; it can help you achieve better performance for your sport.

If you’re a casual exerciser of many sports, a cross trainer may be sufficient. Regardless, the shoes you choose should be very comfortable from the moment you try them on.
