Acupuncture for Back Pain

Acupuncture for Back PainMany people who are disappointed with the results of traditional medical treatment for chronic back pain turn to acupuncture for relief.

In fact, back pain is the leading reason for visits to licensed acupuncturists, according to a recent study that compared medical acupuncture, simulated acupuncture using toothpicks that did not penetrate the skin, and “usual” care for chronic back pain.

After two months, 60 percent of the acupuncture participants experienced a significant improvement in their level of functioning, compared with 39 percent of those receiving usual care.

The “toothpick” participants may have felt better because either the stimulation of acupressure points triggered physiological processes that result in reduced pain and improved function, or because of a placebo-like effect.

Regardless, the authors of the study concluded that patients seeking a relatively safe and effective treatment for back pain might find acupuncture to be a reasonable option.

One benefit is the reduction of long-term exposure to the potential adverse effects of medications often associated with traditional medical treatment.
